South Conway County Public School Foundation Has Real Impact – March 2005
Chartered in 1995, the South Conway County Public School Foundation
was one of the first such foundations formed in Arkansas. Under the
leadership of president Bill Stacks, it has done a terrific job in
funding new technology and innovative classroom projects proposed by
teachers.
The foundation has
- obtained 11 used Pentium computers and equipped each with
"Accelerated Reader" software
- raised $988,000 through fundraising events and grants to equip a
Spatial Technology Computer Lab at Morrilton H.S., establish a
Community Technology Center, purchase needed equipment and classroom
materials, and bring the Accelerated Math program to the district
- funded two Model Classrooms in 4th and 5th grades at a cost of
$20,000. Each classroom has 5 computers and is connected to the
internet; students learn to use Power Point and Smart Boards.
- helped lead a successful effort in 2003 to pass school millage
rates, allowing the District to proceed with construction and
renovation projects throughout the system
- raised $43,000 to place wireless tablet computers in the hands of
a test group of ninth grade students. These tablet computers could
make textbooks, heavy backpacks, and perhaps even wall lockers
obsolete.
Bill Stacks states: "We shall always be grateful for your help in
getting us hooked up with the company that provided the significant
grant for our high school spatial technology lab. We've come a long
way since that time, thanks to the hard work of a lot of folks and
the generosity of our supporters. Thanks for helping us get off the
ground!"
