VisionWorks' Breakthrough Solutions
Community and Regional Success Stories
Eureka Springs is Doing Exciting Things – February 2006

One of the characteristics of effective communities is the ability to leverage local assets and initiatives with outside resources. Eureka Springs, a VISION 2010 community, is doing that with several initiatives, as reported by Glenna Booth, Economic Development Coordinator.

  • Eureka Springs received a "Your Town Design" grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and National Endowment for the Arts.

  • The city is working with Dr. Otto Loewer, Director of the University of Arkansas Economic Development Institute, on a project that connects the hospitality program at the U of A – Fayetteville with the Crescent Hotel and other hospitality businesses in Eureka Springs.

  • The city is exploring ways to create an arts-based cottage industry, attract arts tourists, develop regional marketing, develop ecotourism, develop a fish hatchery, create a digital film industry, and recruit creative/knowledge-based businesses. A task force has been established to develop the arts, culture, and heritage assets of Eureka Springs, appointed by the mayor.

  • The Community Development Partnership of Carroll County received a HUD grant and completed a study on alternative economic development strategies.

  • Eureka Springs was certified as an ACE community through the Arkansas Department of Economic Development last November, and the city continues to have study and action committees active in several issue areas.

Congratulations to the leaders and citizens of Eureka Springs for their creativity and innovation in shaping their future.
