Focus Garland County Is Off and Running - May 2002

Focus Garland County, a partnership of eight organizations in Garland County, was formed for the purpose of developing and implementing a strategic visioning process in the county. The team hired Darlene Garrett to facilitate the process.

Here is a report from Darlene: "Focus Garland County is going great! We have obtained vision ideas from nearly 2000 residents. We have had meetings in public buildings, churches, neighborhoods, schools, and with special interest groups. The chambers of commerce in Hot Springs and Hot Springs Village have hosted special visioning meetings as well. Our vision meetings will end in May, and we will begin editing, categorizing, and sorting the ideas. Study-action teams are poised to roll up their sleeves and begin planning how we can bring our visions into reality. The community involvement has been awesome."

With a goal of involving 5,000 citizens in Garland County, Focus Garland County is well on its way. The following events have already taken place:

  • 29 facilitators have been trained, with 6-8 hours of training and supervision.
  • 62 "Voicing Your Visions" meetings have been held.
  • "Voicing Your Visions" sessions have also been held in all of the high schools.
  • Quapaw Technical Institute excused all of its students from classes to participate in a "Voicing Your Vision" meeting on campus.
  • All 4th graders in the county are drawing visions of the future of the county.
  • A Focus Garland County Vision Fair is scheduled for August 5-10.

Congratulations to Focus Garland County - to the founding partner organizations, to the facilitators, and to Focus Garland County Coordinator Darlene Garrett - for doing a terrific job. Darlene may be reached at (501) 318-3628, or dgarrett@uaex.edu.
