Pocahontas Wins in The Great Race - June 2004

The Great Race is the country’s longest running vintage and richest vintage automobile rally. Each year more than 100 vintage automobiles participate, and this year The Great Race traveled through Pocahontas for a lunch stop on June 22. Hosting The Great Race is a project of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce. "It went very well, considering we had a rainy day," states Mark Futrell, a member of the Randolph County VISION 2010 Leadership Team.

"There were a couple thousand people around the courthouse square, and the Great Race people were impressed. If we win the Best Lunch spot, $5000 will go to our local library." Pocahontas was voted second in the nation for the best stops in 1999, when they served duck, wild turkey, and catfish to the Great Race participants.

Each day, drivers and navigators carefully follow a set course while competing in a time-speed-distance race. Vehicles must be 45 years or older, and the age factor plays a big part in the final score. Great Race vehicles arrive to spectator-lined streets as the $4 million parade of historic automobiles pass by. Learn more at www.greatrace.com.

In other news, the Imperial Dinner Theater and Studio for the Arts in Pocahontas is getting ready to open a new facility. One of only two year-round dinner theaters in Arkansas, the $1.5 million facility attracts visitors and tour buses from Missouri and surrounding states. Approximately half of the funds were raised locally, which demonstrates tremendous community support for these institutions and for the director, Ms. Andee Evers. See www.randolphchamber.com/tourism/imperial.html.

Way to go Pocahontas - we knew you were a winner even before The Great Race.
