Randolph County Conducting Technology Survey – August 2001

Seeking to harness the power of broadband connectivity, the Randolph County VISION 2010 Steering Committee is conducting a technology survey, which will become the basis for strategic efforts to attract telecommuters as well as support eco-tourism and other economic development strategies.

"We have a technology study action team, Cox Communication is installing fiber optic cable in Pocahontas, and we will soon have cable modems. All of this is a direct result of being a Governor’s Technology Community and support from the Arkansas Department of Information Systems. Our success is also a result of being a VISION 2010 community, and (because) of Representative Harmon Seawel’s efforts," states Mark Futrell from the Randolph County VISION 2010 Leadership Team.

Pam Rankin, chairperson of the technology planning committee, is the sparkplug for the technology survey: "People wanted more equitable access, particularly out in the rural areas. They want more training, distance learning, telemedicine, and wireless (access)."

"We are now looking at eco-tourism and telecommuting to Jonesboro," states Rankin (pages@tcac.net) "I am telecommuting to a job in Australia, so I know it can be done. We need to give people a reason to use information technology. You can develop all the hardware, software, and infrastructure, but if people don’t use it, it is worthless."
