Thornton - Small in Number, Large at Heart - April 2004

Picture of sign - Welcome to Thornton Small in Number Large at Heart

"Small in Number, Large at Heart" is the motto of Thornton that is on the sign at the entrance to the community, and this motto describes the community well. Located six miles southwest of Fordyce in southern Arkansas, Thornton has a population of 502.

"We are committed to developing Thornton to increase the quality of life," states Dr. Levenis Penix, mayor of Thornton. "Recently, about half of the streets have been repaired and the surface renewed. This project will be continued. There is a renewed effort to develop a park area as well as a continuing effort to acquire the vacant former high school building. The community has discussed plans to use the former school building as a community and municipal center, with potential for offices, a senior citizens center, and a new home for the community library."

Thornton recently hosted its annual barbecue to kick off the Hogskin County Festival, Calhoun County’s festival. About 300 people attended the local barbecue, which included live music and introductions of political candidates. The event was publicized in 8 or 9 local and regional newspapers. You go Thornton - we are proud of you.
